A person who holds an office by virtue of their position. Example; The President was an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors.

It is often mistaken to mean a person who holds a position but is not entitled to vote. This is actually a non-voting member.

Example; The Vice-President was an ex-officio non-voting member of the Board of Directors.
