Up to the Minute is a CBS overnight broadcast which offers hard news, features, interviews, weather, sports, business and commentary. Up to the Minute draws from the full resources of CBS News, including the CBS Evening News, Newspath, affiliate stations, the CBS Radio Network and Reuters Television. It rebroadcasts selected stories from CBS Sunday Morning, 48 Hours, 60 Minutes and Face the Nation. The show is currently hosted by Betty Nguyen, although several anchors have filled in during the summer of 2010.[1]
History
The series, then anchored by Charlie Rose, premiered under the name CBS News Nightwatch in 1982, adopting its current name on March 30, 1992. It is broadcast from 2 AM to 3 AM ET, with rebroadcasts through 6 AM local time, depending on the station (though most CBS stations end Up to the Minute at 4:30 a.m. with the CBS Morning News airing after it). However, the majority of CBS stations do not air the program in its entirety and join the program in progress five minutes to as much as 1½ hours after the start of the newscast, due to local programming.
The show's graphics and set were traditionally several years behind that of the daytime broadcasts, with early-1990s era CBS graphics being used well past the year 2000. These graphics were updated in 2006, 2009, and then again in 2011 to match the current look from the CBS Evening News. As of 2011, it, along with America's Next Top Model, The Bold and the Beautiful, Big Brother, and Let's Make a Deal remain the only five programs on the major five English-language broadcast television networks (not counting outsourced weekend children's programming lineups) not airing in high definition or at minimum, standard definition widescreen. It is also the only non-HD or widescreen news program on the four major broadcast networks or three cable news channels.
Its main competitor is ABC's World News Now; compared to World News Now, which follows a more irreverent format, Up to the Minute is a more straightforward newscast. NBC currently programs the non-news Poker After Dark and a replay of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in the overnight time slots (NBC did air their own late newscasts from the early 1980s until 1999), while Fox has never carried any post-midnight programming on weekdays (although sister network Fox News Channel does broadcast Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld on overnights). Regular on-air contributors include John Quain, the show's computer consultant (1998 to present).
The previous full-time host, Michelle Gielan, departed in 2010. Several anchors filled in afterwards, notably Emily Smith, until Betty Nguyen took over in October 2010.
