Joseph F. Ossanna (December 10, 1928, Seattle, Washington - November 28, 1977, Monterey, California) was a member of the Technical Staff of the Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey. He was actively engaged in the software design of Multics (Multiplexed Information and Computing Service), a general purpose operating system used at Bell.

Ossanna received his Bachelor of Engineering from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, in 1952.

In 1973, he also authored the first version of troff for Unix entirely written in PDP-11 assembly language.[1] However, two years later, he re-wrote the code in C. He had planned another rewrite which was supposed to improve its usability but this work was taken over by Brian Kernighan.[2]

He died as a consequence of a car accident.[2]
