Broughshane

Broughshane is a village in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is situated 3 miles north-east of Ballymena on the A42 road. Broughshane is known as the Garden Village of Ulster. The village has previously been the winner of Ulster in Bloom, Britain in Bloom and Europe in Bloom. It had a population of 2,364 people in the 2001 Census.

It was the ancestral home of Sir George White VC the hero of the Siege of Ladysmith and to whom there is a memorial in the local village churchyard.

Broughshane is situated in the Ballymena Borough Council area.

Legend has it that St. Patrick cursed the town when no one in it would help him escape from Slemish Mountain where he was a slave.

2001 Census

Broughshane is classified as an intermediate settlement by the NI Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) (ie with a population between 2,250 and 4,500 people). On Census day (29 April 2001) there were 2,364 people living in Broughshane. Of these:

  • 19.3% were aged under 16 and 23.6% were aged 60 and over
  • 48.6% of the population were male and 51.4% were female
  • 4.9% were from a Catholic background and 93.5% were from a Protestant background
  • 2.8% of people aged 16-74 were unemployed.
