Kaja Foglio (née Murphy, born 1970) is a Seattle-based writer, artist, and publisher.

Biography

Early life and education

Born in Bellevue, Washington, and reared in Kirkland, Washington, Foglio graduated from Juanita High School in Kirkland, Washington in 1988. She attended the University of Washington, where she was heavily involved with the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism.[1]

Career

After graduating from UW, she married Phil Foglio and they founded Studio Foglio, LLC in 1995. The studio became the venue for her art prints, many produced as cards for Magic: The Gathering. Studio activities quickly expanded into the broader publishing field. The artist co-writes and illustrates the webcomic Girl Genius with her husband, Phil. She is also the chief graphic designer and webmaster for the Studio Foglio and Airship Entertainment web sites.

Foglio has also illustrated the omnibus edition of Barry Hughart's The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox.

Kaja and Phil won the first ever Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story for Girl Genius, Volume 8: Agatha Heterodyne and the Chapel of Bones in 2009.[2] They continued to win the Hugo Award for Best Graphic story in 2010 [3] and 2011.[4] Following the third award, Kaja and Phil requested that GG not be considered for that award in 2012.
