The game started out rather slow for Iowa, and new starting Quarterback James Vandenberg, as Iowa was turned away from the end zone on their first possession, opting to settle for a field goal instead, making the score 3-0 after five minutes taken off the game clock, they would not score until their third possession, when Vanderberg ran in from the 2-yard line giving Iowa a 10-0 lead. Midway into the first quarter, back up Running Back freshman Mika'il McCall went down, it would be stated later on that he suffered a broken ankle, and would be out for the rest of the season. Wide Receiver Marvin McNutt would have one of his best games as a starter, as Vandenberg found him twice for touchdowns, including a spectacular 83 yard reception. Cornerback Shawn Prater would also break a personal record, as he ran an interception 88 yards for a score, another field goal would finish Iowa's scoring, now leaving the game 34-0 going into the second half, there would be no scoring by either team until near the end of the game, when Tennessee Tech would finally get on the board. The final score of the game would end up 34-7 in Iowa's favor, giving Ferentz his 100th win as head coach at Iowa, and putting to rest, several questions about Iowa's ability to be a contender for the Big Ten title, without the presence of Defensive End Adrian Clayborn, Wide Receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, and Running Back Adam Robinson, as Clayborn had graduated the previous off season, and Koulianos, and Robinson had been expelled by the University, and kicked off the team for their arrests for Drug Possession during the off-season.

Kinnick Stadium was a Sea of Green for this game to honor former cornerback Brett Greenwood who had collapsed the previous week, as he coached a high school football game in Davenport, the former standout player had been airlifted to the university's hospital, ironically, in the shadow of the stadium, after collapsing of a massive heart attack, and placed in a drug induced coma. Iowa would come out with guns blazing in this game, putting behind them, the heartbreaking triple overtime loss to Iowa State two weeks ago, and the last minute win against Pittsburgh the previous week, as quarterback James Vandenburg became a passing machine, finding wide receiver Marvin McNutt several times, including a touchdown, and wide receiver Keenan Davis for another score. Running Back Marcus Coker would also join in on the scring, with a touchdown run. Iowa would go on to win the game by the score of 45-17. Head Coach Kirk Ferentz had the game sent ball to Greenwood's bedside.
