Dr. Arjun Deo Charan is a renowned Rajasthani poet, critic, playwright, theatre director and translator. He is presently the Head of Department of Rajasthani Language in the Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur. He has been selected as president of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Jodhpur on 26th november 2011 for 3 years.

Works

He has written and directed more than 25 plays in Hindi and Rajasthani. His works have been translated into various Indian languages including Urdu. He is known for his women-centric poems and plays. His two books Rajasthani Kahani: Parampra-Vikas and Bagat ri Barkhadi are very important in the Rajasthani literature. In these he has described the development of the modern Rajasthani story and then Rajasthani poetry.

Some of his creations are: Ghar To Ek Naam Hai Bharose Ro, Prem ka Dariya, Nuvi Paribhasava, Ladai su Paili, Aakhar, Kethwa Ujali. He has also edited an anthology of Rajasthani poetry Sakh Bharay Sabad.[1] He has translated Bertolt Brecht’s play, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Girish Karnad’s "Nagmandal" and Shudrak’s "Mrichchakatikam" in Rajasthani.[2]

Awards

He has been awarded by Sahitya Akademi, Delhi for his poetry "Dharam Judh" in 1992.[3] He also has been awarded by Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution to the Rajasthani language theatre in 1999.[4]
