370 Riverside Drive is a building in Manhattan's Upper West Side where several notable people lived. Hannah Arendt was the most prominent resident. Other notables included Grace Zia Chu (landmark culinary figure), Clarence J. Lebel (inventor of fluorescent bulb), Evelyn John Strachey (prominent British politician), among others. The building was mentioned in New York Times 68 times[1].

  • Hannah Arendt lived in the building from 1959 until her death in 1975[2][3][4].
  • Lawrence Blochman, an American detective story writer and translator, lived in the building[5][6].

  • Dr. Seymour Cheng, a diplomat, lived in this building[29]
  • Evelyn John Strachey, British Secretary of State for War, writer and British politician, lived in this building[30].
  • Grace Zia Chu, a landmark culinary figure and a cookbook author[31][32][33][34] advertised "Madame Chu's Chinese Cooking Classes" as listed at 370 Riverside drive, 6B[35][36].

History

The 16 story building was completed in 1922 and converted to a cooperative in 1973[37]. The building architects were Schwartz & Gross[38].
