The River Fertha

The River Fertha (seen in some old maps as the Valentia River) is a river in South West Kerry. Its source is in the Southwestern Macgillicuddy Reeks above Teeromoyle and it flows approximately 10 miles to its estuary at Valentia harbour. The principal town in the region Caherciveen is located close to the mouth of the River Fertha. There are two crossings at Caherciveen, one and old raiilway bridge and another is a single carrigeway used by cars. The town also has an artificail marina built in the early 2000's. Another crossing was opened in 1992 where a previous one had existed at Cahran road, this bridge crosses a tributarie of the Fertha called 'Cahran River'.
