The Marars belong to the Ambalavasi sect of Brahmins, who are low Brahmins engaged to do menial work in temples. The Marars were the custodians of the Sopanaganam or the holy music of the Gods and played the drums in the temples. Marars are also known as Poduvals in some places. Famous Marars include politician K.Karunakaran.
