Saba Haftbaradaran (21 February 1982 – 8 April 2011), born in Sāveh (Persian: ساوه), also transliterated as Sāva)), was an Iranian former student of Law graduate, who was killed in an attack on the refugee Camp Ashraf, where she lived.[1]
Controversial death
Saba was reported to have been killed by live ammunition of the Al-maliki forces while filming the attack along side her friend and colleague Asieh Rakshani.[2] Both were shot directly by a marksman of the 5th Battalion of Iraqi ground forces. The tragic incident raised alarm by Senator Kerry[3] and international agencies and Parliamentarians[4], later declared unacceptable by the UN Human Rights High Commissioner Mrs. Navi Pillay.[5] Sabas’ last message was filmed by a colleague only hours before her death.[6] Her father later appealed for an investigation into the bloodbath and reasons for her death. Amnesty International in a statement called the incident "very worrying" and indicated that "the Iraqi authorities are responsible for the security and well-being of Camp Ashraf’s residents and this includes providing access to adequate and immediate medical treatment when needed".[7] The incident has become an embarrassment for parties involved in guaranteeing security for the camp.[8] According to Saba's father, Saba's treatment was deliberately hampered by Iraqi officers sent by the Prime Ministry's Office.[9]
