North Beach is not Durbans most famous beach since there is the beachfront and sits between the bay of plenty and Dairy beach. It is the primary beach looked after by the Durban Surf Lifesaving Club and the clubhouse features prominently on the marine parade. The beach itself is flanked by two large piers and is accesible from the marine parade which runs along the Golden Mile.

Know best for its good surf conditions and ideal holiday setup, North beach is home to a wide range of people who regularly spend their time there, from surfers , bodyboarders, lifesavers riding anything from paddleskis's to malibu boards and skateboarders to plain swimmers and sun seekers.

The beaches are protected by a series of shark nets and patrolled by lifesavers. During the festive season, lots of holidaying revellers flood the beaches , camping out, braaing and revelling. In recent years the number of people has had a detrimental effect on the area with people sleeping on the streets and bathing in public taps and showers. Local businesses and residents complain about unhygenic effect of the revellers on public spaces and the vastly increased crime rate.

North Beach has a number of restaurants in its immediate vicinity, the most significant of which is Joe Kools. Containing a restaurant, bar and niteclub overlooking the beach, Joe's as its affectionately know, has been part of North beach for many years.Joes is a great place nut not the best since there is the sun coast casino at the northbeach
