The AAA Cardinal District is a high school conference in the state of Virginia that includes schools exclusively from Prince William County. AAA is the largest enrollment class of the Virginia High School League and also typically the most competitive level in Virginia high school sports.

The Cardinal District schools compete in the AAA Northwest Region with the schools from the AAA Cedar Run District, the AAA Commonwealth District, and the AAA Western Valley District.

Facts about the district

All Cardinal District schools except Osbourn Park are currently located in eastern Prince William County of Northern Virginia which draws students who live in Dumfries and several unincorporated sections around Dumfries, including Dale City and Woodbridge. Currently, Prince William County schools are split between the Cardinal and the Cedar Run Districts due to the high amount of growth in the county, but all Prince William schools were in the Cardinal District until 2001. The smallest school in the Cardinal is Potomac with an enrollment at around 1,600 and the largest member is Osbourn Park with an enrollment at around 2,700.

The Cardinal District holds one of the perennial state football powerhouses in Hylton High School, in Volleyball & Girls Basketball at Forest Park High School, and Boys Basketball at Potomac Senior High School.

Redistricting

The Redistricting and Reclassification Committee of the Virginia High School League presented its initial realignment proposal for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years in late November 2011. The Cardinal District would expand from seven to eleven schools, adding Battlefield High School, Osbourn High School, Patriot High School and Stonewall Jackson High School from the Cedar Run District. This would create an all Prince William County district, with the exception of Osbourn High School, which is located in the City of Manassas. The Cedar Run would remain home for Broad Run and Freedom-South Riding High Schools. They would also add Briar Woods High School, Potomac Falls High School, Sherando High School, Tuscarora High School and Woodgrove High School.
