James Deketh in 1761, painting in the collection of Frisian Maritime Museum

Jacobus Deketh (Harlingen, 1726 - Zeewijk (Almenum), 26 July 1764) was a captain in the Frisian Admiralty.[1]

Family

His father Jan Deketh was probably from Jutland in Denmark.[2] In 1701, his father got a job as an official of the receiver-general of the Frisian Admiralty. After 1721 he took the post of receiver-general true. His mother Anna Gardinius was also associated with the Frisian Admiralty, she was the widow of Captain Peter Coderq[3] and the third wife of Jan Goverts Deketh.[2]

Early Life

He was the son of Jan Deket(h) and Anna Goverts Gardin(g)ius. On April 9, 1726, he was baptized in the Great Church (Grote Kerk) in Harlingen.[4] He had older brothers Govardus born 1717,[5] Reiner born 1719,[6] Everhardus[7] born in 1722.

Career

In 1744 at the age of 18 Deketh joined the Admiralty of Amsterdam. During this time he was a leutenant and captain and sailed to the East Indies protecting trading ships.[2] After 1758 Deketh was promoted in the Frisian Admiralty. He commanded the ship Edam in 1768.[8] In 1759 he was appointed captain of the Frisian Admiralty and in 1760 he commanded the Prins Willem which was a frigate with 36 guns.[2] In this ship he escorted several convoys sailing to Italy, England and France. He made four journeys to the Mediterranean Sea. On behalf of the Netherlands republic he undertook several trips to Algiers which he brought gifts. This served to propitiate the Barbary pirates who at that time made the Mediterranean unsafe. [3] His death is recorded on a plaque in the Grote Kerk in Harlingen.[9]

He died at home on 26 July 1764 only 38 years old. His estate included a stable, orangery, gardening shed, carriage house and farm house. His portrait was painted on 13 July 1761 in Livorno by Ranieri Succi. In the painting he is unexpectedly holding a book titled in English Guardian Volume 1.[2] The Fries Scheepvaartmuseum purchased the painting from an man from ’s Hertogenbosch when a film crew filming Tussen kunsten kitsch tried to find out about the painting.[2]
