Devyani Rana was the longterm girlfriend of Crown Prince Dipendra of Nepal. The denial of his parents to consent to his marriage with Devyani was the probable cause of the tragic death of the royal family in Nepal. The Prince shot and murdered seven members of his family before being mortally wounded himself (either by his own hand or by the Palace Guard). He was proclaimed King of Nepal whilst in a coma. He died two days later.

Devyani belonged to the royal family that ruled Nepal until 1951 and it was believed that the marriage could stabilise relations. Her mother hailed from an influential Indian royal family (the Scindias , such as Madhavrao Scindia). Devyani fled to India immediately after the royal massacre to escape media attention.
