Early life

Denisse Guerrero Flores (born August 8, 1980) is a Mexican musician and singer-songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist of the electropop band Belanova.[1] She was born in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, on August 8, 1980. As part of Belanova, she has released five albums with bandmates Edgar Huerta and Richie Arreola since the group was signed to Virus Records, and subsequently Universal Mexico, in 2000.

Guerrero enjoyed singing since her childhood. Living in a small city, however, meant she was unable to cultivate this talent. When she was eight years old, Guerrero was named the winner of a Los Mochis singing competition. She has named this event as the spark that inspired her to pursue singing.

Since I was little I sang and took part in all I could ... until one day, when I was about eight, I was chosen Queen of the Los Mochis Carnival after my mom entered me in the pageant. Imagine that! When I grew up, I decided I had to find a place where I could engage in everything that I was interested in, things that I couldn't do in Los Mochis.[2]

Guerrero then moved from Los Mochis to Guadalajara, Jalisco to pursue singing and music composition, as well as to study fashion design, in which she obtained a university degree. She worked with various musicians from the city before meeting Edgar and Richie and forming Belanova.

Belanova

The band's first album, Cocktail, explored house music, electronic music, and featured some hip-hop influences. The album was released in 2003 and produced successful singles, such as "Tus Ojos" and "Aún Así Te Vas". The album reached number five on the Mexican Albums Chart[3] and was certified Gold; consequently, the album was named one of the Top Five albums of 2003 by Rolling Stone Mexico.

Their second release moved away from house and toward a more commercial synthpop sound. Dulce Beat was released in 2005 and propelled the band into the national spotlight with a string of chart-topping singles: "Me Pregunto", "Por Ti", "Rosa Pastel", and "Niño". The success of the album produced the band's first live release, Dulce Beat Live, as well as a deal with Disney to record a song for the Latin American release of High School Musical and a Latin Grammy nomination.

Fantasía Pop, released in 2007, was the band's third album. Featuring an overall pop sound, it brought them even more success in Mexico, as well as in parts of the United States and elsewhere in Latin America. The band ended as the most played act in Mexico in 2008 with the single "Cada Que..." topping the Year-End Charts.[4] The success of the album produced a second live recording, Tour Fantasía Pop, and garnered multiple awards and nominations for the band, including their second nomination and first win at the Latin Grammys.

The band's next studio project was split into two releases. Sueño Electro I was released in 2010, followed by Sueño Electro II in 2011. The albums featured a return to synthpop and increased electronic influences, as well as experimentation with traditional Ranchera music and instruments such as French horns and a string orchestra. Four successful singles were released. The first release garnered a third nomination at the Latin Grammys.

In early 2012, the group confirmed that they have started writing and recording new material, focusing on dance music, though they have not settled on the final style of their upcoming sixth album.[5]

Other projects

Denisse is active in the Mexican fashion scene. She is a model for the brand cherryproject, operated by her friend Jonathan Morales.[6] In 2012, she was chosen as the official image of the International Designers Mexico convention.[7] She has collaborated with numerous Mexican musicians, such as Sussie 4, Pxndx, and Moenia.
