Machine Head is the third Mk II (sixth overall) Deep Purple studio album. It was recorded in Montreaux, Switzerland in December 1971 and released in March 1972. The album has been very influential in the development of heavy metal music.

In 2001 Q magazine named it as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums Of All Time.
