Bird Neighbors, published in 1897, was the first major work by nature writer Neltje Blanchan.[1] The book combined scientific data with color illustrations, accessible language, and personal experience reflecting Blanchan's joy in nature.[1] In his introduction, naturalist John Burroughs praised it as "reliable" as well as "written in a vivacious strain by a real bird lover."[2] It sold over 250,000 copies,[1] helping to make the author the best-selling female nature writer of her time.[3]
The book was also republished by the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation in 1999.
