Siberian Anthracite is Russia's largest producer of Ultra High Grade anthracite (UHG). The company, which has its headquarters in Novosibirsk region, produces anthracite from open-strip mines in the Gorlovsky Coal Basin of Western Siberia, where its reserves are estimated at more than 200 Mt.[1]
Production
Siberian Anthracite's production assets are located in the Iskitim district of Novosibirsk oblast. The company's assets include five coal reserves, two processing facilities and a fleet of transport and other equipment.[2] It is the largest coal company in Novosibirsk region, with more than 2,000 employees.
In 2006, the company launched a 10-year investment programme targeting an increase in production to 9.5 million tons a year.[3] Output in 2011 was 3.4 million tons.[4] The company exports most of its production (85% in 2010),[5] largely to customers in south-east Asia such as Hyundai Steel.[6]
Anthracite produced by the company is used mostly an input material for the steel-making process. It can be substituted for coke in blast furnaces, and is also used in pulverised coal injection and iron-ore sintering and pelletising, as well as production of electrodes.
Ownership and history
Siberian Anthracite is part of the Alltech Group, which is the majority shareholder. A minority stake is owned by GLG Partners.[7] The company is led by CEO Dmitry Shatokhin.
Siberian Anthracite dates back to the mid-1970s, having been founded in 1974 to supply a number of Soviet enterprises producing electrodes and metallurgical and ferroalloy plants. The company's assets were restructured in 2001 as CJSC Siberian Anthracite. In 2011, it was reported that the company planned to list its shares in London.[8]
Social enterprise
Siberian Anthracite was a founder member of Novosibirsk-based professional ice-hockey club Sibir, and continues to sponsor the club.[9][10]
