"Zack Lipton", Zachary Lipton (19 August 1985, - ) is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader from New Rochelle, New York. He attended Columbia University and is the grandson of composer Issachar Miron.[1] He has produced one album and is currently producing his second.[2] Zack Lipton lives currently in New York City where he plays regularly with his group 'Ojama' at the "Luca Lounge",[3]

Early life

Zack was raised in New Rochelle, NY where he studied with many musicians including Branford Marsalis.[4] He attended New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle NY and attended Columbia University in 2004. He graduated from Columbia in 2007 soon after releasing his first album. While at Columbia, he studied under jazz musicians Steve Wilson, Wessell Anderson, and Joel Frahm. He graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Economics and also studied computer science. His first album, "First Steps" was praised in All About Jazz by reviewer John Barron as displaying "artistic integrity, avoiding shifting trends and remaining true to the essence of the jazz genre."

Following his graduation from Columbia, he has maintained a musical career while taking several long breaks to fight an autoimmune illness, a battle that he has documented on his web site.[5] Despite the persistent struggle and occasional breaks, he has continued to perform, including at the La Rochelle Jazz Festival in May, 2010 [6] the Jazz Showcase in December, 2010 [7]

As of August. 2011, the Zack Lipton Band is the house band at the Moldy Fig jazz club in New York City's Lower East Side, performing every Friday and Saturday at midnight.[8]
