The rack railway of Puy de Dôme (or Panoramique des Dômes) is a 5.2 km long rack railway being built to allow access to the top of the Puy de Dôme in France. The Conseil général du Puy-de-Dôme voted in 2008 for its construction and will be the owner.

The Canadian company SNC-Lavalin will be in charge of the construction and exploitation of the future railway under a 35 year agreement from the public service. Construction work has started in March 2010[1] for an opening in 2012. The rolling stock will be provided by Stadler Rail.

The train will have a capacity of 1,200 persons an hour.

History

There has already been a railway with central rail on the Puy de Dôme (using the Hanscotte system) from 1907 to 1925[2]. In 1906, the construction of a railway with central rail started; it connected place Lamartine in Clermont-Ferrand (elevation 390 metres) to an artificial platform near the mountain top at 1,414 metres. The railroad was 14.7 km long and operated between 1907 and 1926 at a loss.
