Kate Brown read English at Oxford and music in Austria before beginning to direct opera. She worked for Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera, Scottish Opera, Opera North and various smaller companies in the UK, and at the Staatsoper Vienna, La Fenice Venice, Teatro Bellini Catania, and the Zarzuela in Madrid. She was the first female director to produce operas at the Handel festivals of Halle and Goettingen in Germany, she also produced Handel and Purcell in Spain, Weber in Germany, and Gilbert and Sullivan in the US. She produced many music drama pieces large and small for the Scottish Early Music Consort and Glasgow International Music Festival. In 2006 she married Ralph Quartano.
