Coalgate scam is a ₹186,000 crore (US$22 billion) coal mining scandal that has exposed the ugly underside of Indian politics and economic life. This scam along with 2G spectrum scam are two of the largest scams in India's post independence history. The most infamous scam in India in last sixty years, the Bofors scam , where the alleged payoff was ₹64 crore (US$7.7 million), would have been a baby scam by current standards.
