Marvin Rees

Marvin Rees is a Jamaican-Welsh British Labour politician, currently standing to be Mayor of Bristol[1].

Education

Marvin Rees lived in Lawrence Hill before attending the University of Wales in Swansea and the Eastern University. He studied for the World Fellows Program at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut[2].

Community Involvement

Rees was a member of the controversial Bristol Legacy Commission [3][4], founding and running the Bristol Leadership Programme, a two week program which exposed ten young people to the skills and knowledge to equip them with the knowledge and know how of how to become a ‘leader’. [5] [6]

[7], within the Legacy Programme, and a former Director of the Bristol Partnership whose goals are to make Bristol's prosperity sustainable, reduce health and wealth inequality, build stronger and safer communities, and raise the aspirations and achievements of young people and families.[8]

Career

Rees was a freelance journalist and radio presenter at BBC Radio Bristol[9]. He was the Communications and Events Manager at Black Development Agency (now Phoenix Social Enterprise). [10].

Rees is currently employed in the city of Bristol as the Programme Manager for race equality in mental health issues at NHS Bristol[11]. His experiences in the United States included work as an outreach assistant at the Sojourners Community and in the communications department at Tearfund[12].

Mayoral Candidate

Rees was selected by a ballot of Bristol Labour Party members on 19th June 2012.[13]. Other candidates included former Labour MP Dan Norris and Labour Party leader Helen Holland.[14]

Speaking about the role, Rees says, "Elected city mayors are so much more commonplace in American politics, and [I have] the personality and drive to take on the role – that's really what put the idea into my head."[15]

Personal life

Marvin Rees is 40 years old, married with two children and lives in Bristol.
