Ian Shepherd (b. 1971) is a British mastering engineer, Blu-ray and DVD author, and managing director of Mastering Media Ltd [1]. He also runs the website Production Advice [2]. He is most widely known for founding Dynamic Range Day [3], an online event aimed at raising awareness of the Loudness Wars.
Career
Shepherd first trained and worked at Sound Recording Technology [4] from 1994-2010, and left in 2010 to form Mastering Media. His recording, mastering, re-mastering and authoring credits are diverse, including Keane, Tricky, Deep Purple, Tina May & the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra[5], Culture Club, Christine Tobin and King Crimson[6] amongst many others.
Dynamic Range Day
In 2010 Shepherd founded Dynamic Range Day [7], following the interest raised by his commentary on the controversial sound of Metallica's Death Magnetic album [8] [9][10][11]. The event has grown in popularity each year, with industry support from Solid State Logic, Bowers and Wilkins and others. [12][13]
Educational Work
Shepherd has been featured in Music Tech magazine and Future Music, and runs an online course called the Home Mastering Masterclass. [14][15]. He also regularly writes on the Production Advice website on issues related to mastering and audio reproduction quality.[16]
