The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier: Invincible (2012) is the second book in Jack Campbell's Beyond the Frontier, which is part of the larger The Lost Fleet series.

Plot summary

Beginning from the ending of the previous book, the fleet has arrived in a new star system which is defended by a fleet of massive super battleships and space stations. Ignoring all of the First Fleet's attempts to communicate peaceful intentions, this system's species send their ships into battle on suicide runs, while guarding the exiting jump point with the enormous fortresses. The new race is named "Bear-cows" for the teddy bear look and herd mentality.

Using the Kicks' natural thought process, the fleet manages to escape the system only to encounter a third alien race. This third race is willing to communicate and coordinate against the Kicks, with whom they apparently share a contested border. The third species is known as the spider-wolves or 'Dancers' for their flowing formations and sleek engineering style.

Massive fleet issues begin to crop up due to the abbreviated life expectancy of the ship components. After defeating the Kick armada and capturing one of their super battleships, the fleet negotiates a sort of compact with the Dancers. Geary is advised that the Enigmas may launch an immediate attack on Midway given the fleet is trapped beyond the Enigma's territory, and the Enigmas may assume they've been destroyed. The Dancers agree to allow the fleet to use their hypernet system and agree to accompany them to Alliance headquarters in exchange for duct tape.

Rushing back to Midway, Admiral Geary manages to defeat the Enigma fleet. However, the Syndicate Worlds flotilla have arrived and issue thinly veiled demands for the Kicks super battleship and that the Dancers accompany them to Prime, the Syndicate home world, instead of the Alliance capital. They also demand the withdrawal of Alliance support for the newly independent Midway system. After tense negotiations the Syndicates withdrawal, with the significant cooling of Syndicate-Alliance relations, already under strain from the recent peace treaty.
