Hot Dogs in Montreal provide a fast-food staple throughout the city, on a scale similar to the hot dog culture of Chicago or New York City. Popular chains include La Belle Province, Valentines and Lafleurs.
The city of Montreal has never allowed street food carts, leading to a proliferation of small greasy spoon restaurants , variations on the classic Quebecois casse-croute restaurants, serving hot dogs with fresh cut fries (patates frites, often served 'very brown and greasy', ubiquitous poutine, hamburgers, pogos (local corn dogs), hamburger steaks and very often greek dishes, pizza and smoked meat .
Hot dogs may either be steamies (very mushy fresh from the steamer) or toasties (crisply toasted and grilled), toasties are substantially more expensive and are less popular. Fries or poutine are almost always ordered as sides.
Local hot dogs generally come dressed three ways:
all dressed (same in English or French): with mustard, sweet relish, chopped onion and a fresh coleslaw
Michigan hot dog: a chili dog, usually very tangy due to the addition of poutine gravy: served with or without onions
supreme: from Lafleur's restaurant, with cheese and bacon.
Montreal hot dogs are considered to be fairly small, and are sold for between $0.75 and $1.00 depending on area and dressing.
The most popular brand of frankfurters are Lester's, Lafleur and Levitt's kosher.
