Avidyne Corporation is an avionics company based in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Avidyne is developer of Integrated Avionics Systems, multi-function displays, and traffic advisory systems for light general aviation (GA) aircraft. Headquartered in Lincoln, MA, the company has facilities in Columbus, OH, Melbourne, FL, and Boulder, CO.

History

President and CEO Daniel J. Schwinn founded Avidyne in 1994. Dan had previously founded Shiva Corporation[1], which eventually was sold to Intel. Avidyne pioneered the standalone MFD market when they certified their first Flight Situation Display system in 1997. Avidyne’s FlightMax Entegra line was released in 2003--the first big-glass flight deck system for light general aviation aircraft.[2] On November 3, 2005, Avidyne Corporation and Ryan International Company announced a merger of the two companies.[3] Ryan International was founded in 1981 by CEO Paul Ryan, inventor of the Stormscope weather system.[4]

Avidyne was recognized as Avionics Magazine's "Small Manufacturer of the Year" and was inducted into the Avionics Magazine Hall of Fame in 1999.[5] Avidyne received the NASA 2001 Commitment to Excellence Award for their work on the AGATE HITS program for their work on “Highway in the Sky” (HITS) display technology, as part of NASA’s AGATE (Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments) Alliance. Avidyne successfully demonstrated HITS technology at EAA AirVenture 2001 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.[6][7][8] Avidyne was also chosen for the "Associate Member of the Year" award from the Aircraft Electronics Association in 2002.[9]

Avidyne and ADS-B

Avidyne and MIT are developing ADS-B product hardware for the three-year program, called Airborne Traffic Situational Awareness with Alerts (TSAA) for Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast. The initiative includes prototyping and demonstration of functional hardware, along with the drafting of the industry standards for traffic conflict detection and alerting to be adopted by ADS-B avionics makers. Through the TSAA program, Avidyne and MIT will define the algorithms for conflict detection, and also for reducing false alerts and nuisance alerts, even when flying, for example, in a busy traffic pattern.[10]

Products

Avidyne products are widely recognized as best-in-class for their ease of use. Avidyne’s line of avionics products include the Entegra Release 9 integrated flight deck, safety-enhancing DFC90/100 digital autopilots, datalink-capable EX600 multi-function displays (MFD), and a full line of safety sensors including the ADS-B—upgradeable TAS600 Series Traffic Advisory System the MLB700 Broadcast MLX770 datalink systems, and the TWX670 Tactical Lightning system.

Avidyne launched the radar-replacement MFD market in 1997 with the certification of their original Flight Situation Display, followed by the FlightMax™ series of MFDs, and now the versatile EX600 MFD which supports 20 different radars and a whole host of sensor interfaces.

Avidyne’s Entegra line revolutionized flying in 2003 as the first Integrated Flight Deck for light GA. In 2009, Avidyne launched the Entegra Release 9 Flight Deck, which set a new standard for ease of use in Flight Management Systems (FMS) and integrated avionics capabilities.

In 2010, Avidyne certified their DFC90 and DFC100 digital autopilots with industry-leading features like EP™ (Avidyne's Envelope Protection), EA™ (full-time Envelope Alerting)and Straight & Level capability, dramatically enhancing safety. [11]

Avidyne has announced a full line of panel-mounted, plug-and-play avionics including the touch-screen plug-and-play, IFD540 GPS/NAV/COM, the IFD440 GPS/NAV/COM, the AMX240 Audio Panel, and the AXP340 Mode S Transponder with ADS-B. These systems set a new standard in ease of installation, ease of use, and safety. [12] [13]
