I believe I have this issue, not diagnosed but after reading tons of articles here it's only where the symptoms fit perfectly. I haven't been able to cure it but biggest relief/effective management are from the following
Certain foods will cause coughing immediately and others will with small delay, probably best to avoid once you know which. (I had to stop eating Liquorice as I found it to cause hour(s) lasting coughing) Absolutely avoid "chew tablets" that are chewed into powdery substance in the mouth instead of swallowed whole. Avoid eating 2 hours before going to sleep.
Most important: Lower the feet end of the bed by 15-20 cm so that stomach acid won't have chance to flow up when sleeping. Pay attention that you are relaxed in the stomach & chest area when eating and some time after. I find watching thrilling/exciting tv shows while eating and sitting down to be the major trigger for the cough since those TV shows get me quite tense in the stomach area and if I've just eaten this seems to help push the acids up. Sounds unbelievable but I infact believe this may be a root cause personally as I've practised this for decades and my physiology is such that I easily get tense in stomach/chest area when anticipating some exciting thing. Sitting posture may also be involved in terms of compressing the stomach in a way that helps push the acid up but this is just a theory I have.
