December 4, 1987 | birth_place =Nick James better known by his stage name "Trinidad James" is an Atlanta-based rapper.[1] In James' music video, "All Gold Everything", he shows his bias to his homeland where he featured the national flag more than a dozen times, including bandanas bearing the words Trinidad and Tobago. On YouTube, James' music video has gone viral with more than 1.4 million views. James is believed to be the next big thing in rap. A video of rap heavyweight Wiz Khalifa, real name Cameron Jibril Thomaz, dancing and rapping along to "All Gold Everything" is testament to that belief. The Trinidad Express Newspaper conducted a telephone interview with James to ascertain his Trinidad and Tobago roots. James, 25, said he selected the stage name "Trinidad James" after another rapper had already used his real name Nick James. "I originally wanted to use the name Nick James as an adaptation of Rick James, but another rapper already had that name," James said. "So I decided to use my roots to my advantage and I chose the name Trinidad James." James said his father was born in Tobago and his mother was from Port of Spain. "I am the perfect blend of the two islands," he said. James was born in Mt Hope. Around the age of eight, James said he migrated with his mother to New York, where they met up with his father. James did not want to divulge his parents' names. After living in New York, the family moved to Florida and eventually settled in Atlanta. James returned to Trinidad and Tobago last year to spend time with his relatives from the two islands. James is seen wearing a ring which he bought on his trip to Tobago last year in the "All Gold Everything" video. Asked why he opted to feature the Trinidad and Tobago flag, James said: "It only made sense. This is my first official video and I wanted to show the world that I am proud of where I was born". "I did not want to overdo it but I wanted to bring the elements of Trinidad and Tobago into the video," he said. James also had a word for his critics. "I know I have not been in Trinidad and Tobago all my life, but I am proud of where I am from and I hope people will see that although they may not relate to my music," he said. James' Twitter account also features a Trinidad and Tobago flag, although it is reversed.
