Kamala Lopez (born 1965[1]) is an actress, director, and political activist. Lopez has appeared in movies including I Heart Huckabees and Born in East L.A., and in television shows such as Lie To Me, Alias, and others.[2]
Early life
Lopez is a native of New York, NY who was raised in Caracas, Venezuela.[3]
Career
Lopez has worked as an actor in over thirty feature films including "I Heart Huckabees", Born in East L.A., Deep Cover, and The Burning Season. [2]
In 2007 Lopez hosted Wired Science on PBS, a production of KCET Los Angeles in association with Wired Magazine along with comedian Chris Hardwicke.[4][5][6][7]
Lopez directed the Spanish language short film Ese Beso in Madrid, Spain, starring Daniel Freire and Lia Chapman.[8] She directed the film A Single Woman, about the life of first US Congresswoman, Jeannette Rankin.[9] The film was adapted from the play of the same name, written by Jeanmarie Simpson, a relative of Lopez's,[10] and starred Simpson as Jeannette Rankin along with Judd Nelson and included the voices of Patricia Arquette, Martin Sheen, Chandra Wilson, Peter Coyote, Karen Black, Francis Fisher and the music of Joni Mitchell.[11]
Political activism
In 2010 Lopez created the ERA Education Project, a national media campaign to raise awareness about the Equal Rights Amendment in the United States.[12][13] She is a blogger for the Huffington Post.[14]
Recognition
Ese Beso won the Audience Award at the Boyle Heights Latina Film Festival in 2012.[15] In January 2012, Lopez received one of twenty-one awards given by Women's eNews.[16] In July 2011, she received the Woman of Courage Award from the National Women's Political Caucus.[9] On July 14, 2009 Lopez and Heroica Films were given an Exceptional Merit Media Award for the film A Single Woman.[17] In 2009 she was given a retrospective of her work, both as an actor and director, at the Museum of Latin American Art.[18]
