Ixiamas Fortress is an archeological site located in the Amazonian basin of Bolivia.

Location

  • Lat. 13º 53’.621 South – Long. 68 º 09’.51 West
  • Alt. 2962 feet above sea level

It is located in the municipality of Ixiamas, in the Tequeje river valley, a tributary of Beni River.

Description

The fortress is formed by a big wall longer than 900 feet.[1] According to Bolivian archeologist Freddy Arce Helguero, the fortress was built by the Andean people[2]. It is possible that the Incas utilized the fortress during the Inca Empire as a tambo and commercial base with Amazonic people, probably Moxo people.
