Desmond M.Clarke is an author and professor of philosophy at UCC, in Cork, Ireland. His academic achievements include: his BSc (National University, Ireland), his PhD (University of Notre Dame), and his DLitt (National University, Ireland), MRIA. His research interests lie predominantly in the 17th century, on such topics as the history of philosophy and theories of science - with a specific interest in the writings of Rene Descartes, as well as contemporary church/state relations, human rights, and nationalism. He is currently co-editor of the Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy series, and he is the translator of the Penguin edition of Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy. Prof. Clarke has been a vocal opponent of UCC presidentGerard T Wrixon's redevelopment plans for the university, culminating in the governing body of the college voting to remove him. However it was established that the body didn't have any such right, and Prof. Clarke remained a member of the governing council.
