Hila Elmalich
Hila Elmalich was an Israeli fashion model[1] who died in 2007.[2] Represented by the Israeli branch of the Elite Model Management modeling agency,[2] she was once a famous fashion model in the country.[3]
Background
Hila Elmalich's hometown was in Tiberias, Israel.[4] On November 14, 2007,[5] Elmalich died weighing under 27 kilograms, or 60 pounds[2] (less than 60 pounds[5]) after years of fighting anorexia nervosa.[1] She was 33 years old.[2] Reportedly, Elmalich had fainted and passed away in the day of her 34th birthday. [6] Elmalich was on Isreali television as she had fainted, and she was then rushed to the hospital. Hila Elmalich had been hospitalized several times over the course of several years due to her anorexia nervosa. She finally succumbed to the anorexia and collapsed in her home and had died on a Wednesday due to heart failure. [7] Elmalich was on Isreali television as she had fainted, and she was then rushed to the hospital. Her frame was 5'6 and under 60 pounds, and this would put her body mass index at 9.7 when she had died.[6] Her eating disorder had started around the time that she had become a model, which would put her at 13 years old.[6]
Immediately after her death, Israeli fashion photographer Adi Barkan initiated a worldwide campaign to "change the definition of beauty by encouraging models not be skinny".[2]
Adi Barkan's concern over Hila Elmalich's death led to new body weight and body mass index requirements that do not allow modeling agencies to hire any models who are under the body fat measurement of 19. This is supposed to encourage models to not be so thin and release the pressure for women to continually lose weight.[8]
