The Global Mail is an Australian online news startup that launched on 6 February 2012.[1] The website is notable for being free to access, free of advertising and not-for-profit.[2] By contrast with other news sites, it primarily focuses on investigative journalism and in-depth analysis, electing not to "swim in the 24/7 news cycle."[3] Philanthropist Graeme Wood has committed to funding the website's operations for the first five years, though its source of finance beyond this period is yet to be determined.[4] Notable journalists at The Global Mail include: Stephen Crittenden, Ellen Fanning and Sharona Coutts.[5][6]

The Global Mail changed its design from side scrolling to vertical scrolling on October 11th 2012. Feedback via the comments section on the Global Mail's Anrew Cobby blog showed the change divided readers. Many commented that with modern wide screens and tablet devices the horizontal side scrolling the Global Mail had differentiated itself from most other online journalism sites.

Conflict at The Global Mail grew as readership didn’t, leading to a piece published by Crikey[7].

”The Global Mail‘s founding editor is gone; so are half the original full-time reporters following a rash of resignations and redundancies late last year. Most left angry and demoralised by what they describe as a culture of incompetence, nepotism and cruelty,” wrote Crikey‘s Matthew Knott. “The journalists’ union is liaising with sacked staffers about taking a case to Fair Work Australia.”

The piece ended with a quote from a former Global Mail staffer: “It’s depressing,” the ex-Globey said. “It makes me really angry. It was a great opportunity for someone to do something new and different. Instead we ended up with a bunch of refugees from 1990s Fairfax.”
