Agate Studio is an Indonesian video game developer based in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia[1] . It was founded in April 1st, 2009 by 18 people. In September 2010, Agate created a point and click puzzle game called Earl Grey and this Rupert Guy hit 1 million players in the first week of its launch[2]. In February 2011, their first web based social games called Football Saga was launched and had 58.000 monthly active users and 10.000 daily active users[3]. They also launched the first Near Field Communication[4] and Augmented Reality Game in the world title Smash Mania on Nokia’s phone[5].

The company’s motto is, “Live the Fun Way”, believing that life would be better when fun is around and games is one of the ways achieving it[6]. Hence, In October 22nd and 23rd 2011, Agate Studio together with Kummara and AnimartDigi held Indonesia Bermain in Bandung[7]. It was recorded that more than 7000 people attended and hundreds of digital and conventional games were played.

Company History

The founders of Agate Studio met in October 2007 as college students when they decided to make a game with no budget. With no experience on making games beforehand, the game only made it to a playable state before being scrapped. Learning from this experience, the team moved on to make a game for Microsoft’s Dream Build Play competition, titled Ponporon! The title was showcased on Indonesia Game Show in 2008 and fired up the team. They decided to start an actual video game company, which was officially founded on April 1st, 2009.

Agate Studio’s founder consists of 18 people: Arief Widhiyasa, Andrew Pratomo Budianto, Aditia Dwiperdana, Aswin Juari, Andhika Estrada, Beatrice Nauli Pohan, Charles Haryadi, Erga Ghaniya, Fandri Indrayadi, I Made Teguh Arief Baskara, Nadia Kusumahdewi, Nikki Dibya Wardhana, Ray Suryadipta Susanto, Riyani Mardikaningrum, Shieny Aprilia, Teguh Budi Wicaksono, Vincentius H.W. Ismawan, Wiradeva Arif. During that time, all of them are college students, except one is a high school student.

Seeing condition market at that time, Agate focused in flash games before it started to make advergames and service games in 2010. In addition Agate made advergames and service games In 2010, it merged with Lucidrine too, which has developed a lot of successful flash game titles. The team expanded once more in 2011 with establishment of Agate Jogja in the Yogyakarta. Today, Agate has its own publishing division.
