little progress in healthcare? such a sweeping statement...

________

On the other hand, it seems to be generally believed in Laos. I've spent a good deal of time in the country during the last five years, and have been told repeatedly -- by expats, but especially by Lao people -- that healthcare in a "disgrace". For any health issues that can't be easily treated, people in Vientiane go across the bridge into Thailand, if they can afford it, where barely a couple of hours away are clinics that are believed to be far superior. I ended up going to a hospital in Vientiane last year (2012) for what proved to be bedbug bites, but I thought I'd contracted some hideous tropical disease. The hospital was large and poor, but nurses and doctors were obviously trained and genuinely compassionate.

In other words, the issue seems to be funding, rather than training. Thus the comment above ("little progress in healthcare") may well be appropriate. kentfx 12:18, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
