The Koenigsegg CC8S is a mid-engine sports car, the first produced by Swedish automaker Koenigsegg and the first production car to use dihedral actuation doors, a feature that has become a trademark of the brand. At its introduction it won several awards, including the Guinness World Record for the Most Powerful Production Engine and design awards from both Red Dot in Germany and Utmärkt Svensk Form in Sweden.[1]

Development

The CC8S started off as the CC prototype. Despite very limited resources, the chassis, suspension, brakes, wishbones uprights and many other items where all custom designed for the car by Koenigseggs small team. The car was very original and got a lot of attention but in order to test the waters, Koenigsegg decided to bring the CC prototype to the Cannes Film Festival in 1997. The reaction to the car was favorable and the first international contacts were taken. The automaker felt assured and pushed onwards to reach production and just five years later, in 2002, Koenigsegg began series production of the CC8S model. Just 6 cars were produced before it was replaced by the more powerful CCR model.[2]

Overview

Body

It's a two-door, two-seater Targa top, meaning it possesses a removable hardtop roof with the added feature that is stowable under the bonnet. The chassis is a kevlar reinforced carbon fiber semi-monocoque attached with steel subframe up front and aluminum subframe at the rear for mounting engine, gearbox and suspensions.[3] The whole bodyshell is also carbon fiber and makes use of underbody venturi tunnels and diffusers which along with rear mounted spoiler increase downforce, despite the above, its small frontal area of just 1.825 m² make possible for the CC8S to have a low Cd of just 0.30.

Engine

The CC8S sports a Supercharged Ford Modular 4.7 L DOHC V8 made of cast aluminium with 4 valves per cylinder and carbon fiber covers weighting 210 kg (460 lb), with a compression rate of 8.6:1 it produces 655 PS (482 kW; 646 hp) at 6500 rpm and 750 N⋅m (550 lb⋅ft) at 5000 rpm, redline is reached at 7300rpm, said power goes to the rear wheels only, through a 6 Speed CIMA developed manual gearbox.

Wheels

The CC8S uses magnesium alloy wheels with center locking hubs sporting 225/40ZR 18" front, 335/40ZR 20" rear Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires. Brakes are ventilated disks, 340 mm (13 in) with 6 piston calipers up front and 315 mm (12.4 in) with 4 piston calipers at the rear, all brakes power is assisted by Koenigsegg Advanced Control System.
