1874 Northwich Football Club are an English football club founded on 15 November 2012 following a vote by former Northwich Victoria supporters, who were members of the Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust. The members voted almost unanimously 141 to 4 in favour of breaking away from the club they supported and forming a new, community-owned team in their town.[2][3] On 23 May 2013 the club were accepted into the North West Counties League[4]. They are affiliated to the Cheshire Football Association. They will play their home games at the Barton Stadium, home of nearby Winsford United.

Foundation

The club was founded on 15 November 2012 at a meeting at Lostock Social Club in Lostock Gralam near Northwich. Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust members were given the opportunity to decide on creating a new football club. It emerged, on the day of the vote that the owner of Northwich Victoria had been declared bankrupt and therefore failed the FA Fit and Proper Persons test.[5]

On 29 November 2012 fans attended an open meeting in Northwich, where they chose the name 1874 Northwich for the club.[6] In order to avoid legal issues over the new clubs name, none of the proposed options presented to fans included the words Vics or Victoria.[7] The date 1874 was chosen because that is the year in which Northwich Victoria Football Club was founded, and the style emulates that of other clubs such as 1860 Munich.

Fans were also given a choice of mottos, and the Cheshire Regiment motto 'Ever Glorious' was chosen due to their links with the Drill Field and the town.

On 3 January 2013 it was confirmed that the club was officially registered with the Cheshire FA and had applied to join the North West Counties Football League in time for the 2013–14 season.[8]

On 25 April 2013 it was announced that former Winsford United and Ashton Athletic boss Ian Street would be the club's very first manager.[9] On 28 April 2013 Lee Duckworth was named as Street's assistant.[10]
