Somnath Bharti is a lawyer who practices before the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court.

In June 2012, he led a movement against the alleged interference of the then Minister of Human Resources and Development, Kapil Sibal, in the Joint Entrance Examination process for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology. The government partially withdrew the proposal.[1][2][3]

In 2010-2013, he appeared in news for defending the rights of homeschooled children and subscribers of alternate education system in view of the binding provision of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act through Public Interest Litigations filed in Delhi High Court thrice. In response to his PILs, the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, through an affidavit, clarified that they are not against homeschooling.[4][5][6]

Bharti has been selected as a representative of the Aam Aadmi Party who will contest the constituency of Malviya Nagar in the November 2013 elections for the Delhi Legislative Assembly.[7]

From 25-27 June 2013 Somnath Bharti fought for the rights of NCERT residents 2 of whom died because of consumption of contaminated water and his fight bent the system to the extent that the management agreed to replace the pipeline of water supply and supply potable water to the affected residents. Till the management manages to supply potable water, Somnath Bharti with his party volunteers ensured continuous supply of potable water to the affected residents.[8][9]

Education

He is a graduate from IIT Delhi with LLB from Delhi University.[10]
