Jumbo is a supermarket chain in the Netherlands. It is part of the privately owned Van Eerd Group. Van Eerd was originally a grocery wholesale company, established in 1921.

History

In 1983, Van Eerd started the "Jumbo Supermarkten" supermarket chain. Within a short[quantify] time there were dozens[quantify] of Jumbos in the provinces of North Brabant, Zeeland and Limburg.

As of May 2006, 77 establishments have been opened throughout the Netherlands. Together they have a market share of 3.4% in the Netherlands as of 1 January 2006. Jumbo's marketing claims that the chain has "7 certainties" with which they, among others, claim to have the greatest choice for the lowest prices.

The chain employs 10,000 people and there are, as of April 2006, a total of 53 branches and 24 franchisers.

The head office and distribution centre are situated in Veghel, (Noord Brabant), also Jumbo has 3 regional distribution centres: Beilen, Drachten, Den Bosch. In October 2005 a Jumbo was also opened in Drenthe province, namely in Valthermond. With the opening of this store, there is now a Jumbo in every province in the Netherlands. Although Jumbo now has shops in the whole country there are relatively few Jumbos in the Randstad.

Acquisition of C1000

In September 2011 CVC announced that they would to sell the C1000 supermarket chain. CVC received biddings from several groups; Jumbo, Sligro Food Group, Edeka and Sperwer Group.

On 23 November 2011 it was announced that Jumbo would take over all C1000 stores. Because of this Jumbo became the second largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands, right after Albert Heijn. But this would not mean that the C1000 stores would disappear, many of them were never changed to Jumbo.
