Jakub "Jake" Voráček (born August 15, 1989) is a Czech professional ice hockey right winger currently playing for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted seventh overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing career
Voráček was taken first overall in the 2006 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft and played two seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He also represented the Czech Republic at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship in 2007 and 2008. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets on August 2, 2007.[1]
Voráček made his NHL debut on October 10, 2008 against the Dallas Stars and scored his first career NHL goal in the first period by beating Marty Turco.[2] Voráček scored 9 goals and recorded 29 assists for 38 points in 80 games during his rookie season and helped the Blue Jackets make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. He had the lone assist on the first ever playoff goal in Blue Jackets history, scored by R. J. Umberger.
On June 23, 2011, he was traded along with a 2011 first-round pick (Sean Couturier) and a 2011 third-round pick (Nick Cousins) to the Philadelphia Flyers for Jeff Carter.[3] He signed a one-year contract with the Flyers on July 1,[4] the same day his new team signed fellow Kladno native Jaromír Jágr to a one-year contract.[5] He scored a goal in his Flyer debut, scoring a first period goal against Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins. Voráček set a new career high with 18 goals scored during the 2011–12 season and also scored his first career playoff goal in game one of the Flyers opening round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, beating Marc-André Fleury 2:23 into the first overtime.
Voráček signed a four-year, $17 million contract with the Flyers on July 26, 2012.[6] He subsequently replaced the gap left by Jaromír Jágr, who signed with the Dallas Stars during free agency, on the Flyers top line with Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell. Also playing for HC Lev Praha of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) during the 2012–13 NHL lockout. On February 20, 2013, Voracek scored his first career hat trick against the Pittsburgh Penguins.[7] On February 25 he was named NHL First Star of the Week after scoring four goals and seven assists in four games played.[8]
