Government shutdown, in American politics, refers to a temporary halt in government services when lawmakers cannot pass the necessary funding measures in time. The term can also refer to specific government shutdowns that have occurred in the United States, including:
Recent shutdowns at the federal level:
- United States federal government shutdowns of 1995–96, lasting from November 14 to 19, 1995, and from December 16, 1995, to January 6, 1996
- United States federal government shutdown of 2013, lasting from October 1 to 17, 2013
Shutdowns at the state level:
