A film coating is a thin polymer-based coat applied to a solid dosage form such as a tablet. The thickness of such a coating is usually between 20-100 µm.

Film coating formulations usually contain the following components

  1. Polymer
  2. Plasticizer
  3. Colourants
  4. Opacifiers
  5. Solvent
  6. Vehicle

Functionality wise it is further devided into

  1. Immediate Release Coating
  2. Sustained Release or Modified Release coating
  3. Enteric Release Coating (Enteric coating).
