Richard Neil "Dick" Cabela (October 8, 1936 – February 17, 2014) was an American entrepreneur, best known as a co-founder of Cabela's,[1] one of the world's leading[citation needed] outfitters of outdoor sporting and recreational goods. He stated that his business was inspired by his bout with polio and a deep love of hunting and fishing.[2]
Born in Chappell, Nebraska, Cabela and his father went to Chicago to purchase items for the family furniture store back home. Cabela bought 20 gross of two-dollar hand-crafted fishing lures to re-sell, as well.[3] When the items did not sell locally, he advertised them in newspapers and magazines. He and wife, Mary, built a customer base and created a small mimeographed catalog to offer more fishing gear.[4]
From 1961, the Cabelas, Dick and his brother James, created a catalog business with annual revenues of $2.7 billion, featuring stores in Arizona, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin and shipping goods and 120 million catalogs each year to all 50 states and at least 120 foreign nations.[citation needed] There are also negotiations to bring Cabela's to many other states.[citation needed]
Death
On February 17, 2014, it was announced that Cabela had died at his home in Sidney, Nebraska. He was 77.[5] He was survived by his wife Mary and their nine children.[6]
