Tublat is a fictional ape character in Edgar Rice Burroughs' original Tarzan novel, Tarzan of the Apes, and in the Walt Disney-produced animated television series The Legend of Tarzan.

History

In the novel Tarzan of the Apes Tublat (whose name means "Broken Nose") is a member of a tribal band of Mangani, a fictional species of that is somewhere between ape and human. In the beginning of the original novel, Tublat's mate Kala saves the infant Tarzan from the "king" of their tribe: Kerchak and rears the child, protecting him from both Tublat and Kerchak. When Tarzan reaches his early teens, he fights and kills Tublat to protect Kala.

Disney's version

Tublat's character in the Disney series was changed substantially from his original in the series. As one of the main antagonists in the series along with La and Samuel T. Philander, Tublat was changed to an aggressive, possibly even carnivorous, former member of the ape tribe. In the episode "Tarzan and the Enemy Within", he takes over the family of a gorilla called Gobu and kills the leader. He initially has him banished into the jungle where he is almost killed by hyenas until Tarzan rescues him and Gobu's family retaliate against Tublat. In the episode, he is allies with Bungi the monkey, voiced by Max Casella.

Tublat was voiced by Keith David.
