Atibadi Jagannth Das (c. 1491-1550) was an Oriya poet and litterateur. He wrote Oriya Bhagabata.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Early life

Jagannath Das was born in Kapileswarpur Sashana which is one of the 16 traditional Sasana villages in Puri , on the day of Radhastami 1491. he was born to a Kaushiki Gotri Utakali Purana Panda Family. His mother was Padmavati Devi and his father was Bhagavan Das.

His father was a renowned speaker on the Bhagavatam in Odisha.King Purushottam Deva was pleased with Bhagavan Das's delightful explanations of the Bhagavata philosophy and gave him the “Purana Panda” title. He use to trained his son Jagannath das to follow in his footsteps as a Purana Panda. Sri Jagannatha Dasa was almost of the same age as Sri Chaitanya. Soon after their chancemeeting under the Kalpa Bata there grew a lastingspiritual kinship between the two that developedinto a warm, life-long friendship. Sri Chaitanyawas an avid admirer of Sri Jagannatha Dasa. Hein fact called him "Ati Badi"

Literary works

Jagannath das wrote Oriya Bhagabata. Jagannath Das’ Orissan Bhagavata is considered by many to be the jewel of early Orissan literature. It had a great influence in the standardizing of the Orissan language of Orissa, through its judicious combining of Sanskrit and local words. Its popularity in Orissa is comparable to that of Tulasi Das’ Räma-carita-mänasa in North India and it is still worshiped in many Orissan homes. Every Orissan village used to have a small house or room known as bhagavata tungi, where villagers would gather to listen to recitations of Jagannath Das’ Bhagavata. Many of its verses have become proverbial and are cited frequently by people throughou to disha.

There are 12 Skanda (Volume), each volume have 10-30 Adhya (Chapeter ) and each chaper have 50 to 300 standzas.

Sri Gananatha Das translated the Oriya Bhagabata By Atibadi to English language. the English translation is "Readings from Bhagabata" English vrs of Odia Bhagabata by Ganapati Das.
