Georgia Ruth is a singer-songwriter, harpist from Aberystwyth, Wales. She sings in both English and Welsh.
Early Life
Having been born in South Wales, Williams family moved to Aberystwyth when she was 4 years old, and was educated Bilingually in both English and Welsh.
Choosing to learn the Harp from 7 years of age, Georgia began to play her own music independently whilst studying English Literature at Cambridge University. Her early recordings were sent to BBC Radio Wales Adam Walton, and acclaim led to an early BBC Introducing appearance at Glastonbury in 2008. [1]. Following graduation in 2009, Williams chose to write and perform further works in hope of attracting greater attention to her material.
Career
Choosing not to use her surname, Georgia Ruth's first official release was a vinyl issue EP, “In Luna’’ released by Gwynon records in 2011, on limited edition 10” vinyl. Engineered and produced by David Wrench at the Bryn Derwen studios in Snowdonia. The Ep features Pete Richardson from Y Niwl on drums and Pete Walton on double bass.
The Ep drew acclaim and praise from reviewers and dj’s alike, and gained Radio airplay from Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq [2]
The first album from Georgia, ‘’Week of Pines’’, was released by Gwynon records in 2013. Utilising Dafydd Hughes, Iwan Hughes and Aled Hughes from acclaimed North Welsh band Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, the record was once more engineered, produced and mixed by David Wrench at the Bryn Derwen studios.
Music from the album gained significant radio airplay from Adam Walton and Bethan Elfyn on BBC Radio Wales, Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1, Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music and Simon Raymonde on Amazing Radio. Additionally live sessions were recorded on BBC 6music with Lauren Laverne [3]and on BBC Radio Cymru [4]
The album was further promoted by live appearances at Festival no.6 [5], BBC Introducting at Radio 2 live in Hyde Park [6], and Womex in Cardiff [7] and a BBC Radio 2 session with with Bob Harris [8]
Following the success of Week of Pines in the Welsh music prize competition, the Welsh Ballet performed routines to the album [9]
Georgia will appear at the 2014 Latitude Festival
Awards
Week of Pines was awarded the Welsh Music Prize for 2013[10] Georgia won the Horizon Music Prize in the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards [11]
Collaborations
Williams made a guest appearance on ‘Divine Youth’, a track on the Manic Street Preachers album Futurology in 2014.
Radio
Williams provided Maternity leave cover for Bethan Elfyn on her BBC Radio Wales show [12] and currently presents a Thursday night on C2 youth strand on BBC Radio Cymru, featuring contemporary Welsh language music, features, news & interviews and listeners' texts & e-mails.
