Zoran Corporation is a multinational digital technology company, headquartered in Silicon Valley. The name Zoran is derived from the Hebrew word for silicon. Zoran is incorporated in the state of Delaware and has offices in Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the US.[1]

The company was founded in 1983.

Due to the similarity between the Zoran Corporation's name and services to that of Max Zorin's fictional company in the James Bond film A View to a Kill, which was released in 1985, a disclaimer had to be added to the film to stress that there was no connection between the fictional company and the Zoran Corporation - none of the films producers had been aware of the Zoran Corporation's existence when selecting a name for the villainous Max Zorin (Christopher Walken) and his fictional organisation.

In 2011 Zoran merged with CSR and Zoran now trades under the CSR brand and stock symbol. After the merger, CSR executed massive layoffs of Zoran employees. They cut the DTV division as well as other divisions, which some say caused CSR's share price to jump up substantially.

As of the end of 2012, only the Coach and Quatro products still existed; in December 2013 CSR announced the end of investment in the Coach product line[2] with around 200 layoffs.

As of 06/30/2014, CSR sold the COACH and related camera/video IPs to QUALCOMM. Good move..

Products

Currently Zoran develops and manufactures chips that are used in a wide range of consumer electronics including DVD players, DVD recorders, HDTV, digital cameras and set-top boxes, for example the Coach image processor/video processor line.

History

Zoran was founded in 1983 by Dr. Levy Gerzberg, with focus on DSP technology. In 1997 Zoran acquired CompCore Multimedia and named George T. Haber Executive VP and to its Board of Directors. Haber started GigaPixel, Mobilygen and now is currently the CEO of CrestaTech.

In 2003, Zoran purchased Oak Technology, thereby expanding the product portfolio with chips for use in inkjet printers, laser printers, printer/scanner combination devices, and industrial imaging equipment.

CSR plc. merger

On 21 February 2011, Zoran announced it was merging with CSR, a global leader in wireless connectivity and location.[3] The merger was completed on 31 August 2011,[4] and Zoran now trades under the CSR banner with little mention of the original company name. Zoran mentioned a merge, but actually, it is a take over according to CSR mgt.
