Background

The cemetery was founded by Preston Taylor in 1888, who also established Greenwood Park in 1905. Greenwood Park was the first park in Nashville for African-American communities.[3]

Taylor was born to slave parents in Louisiana in 1849 and moved to Nashville in 1884.[4] Initially along with Taylor, three other men have planned to purchase a 37 acres (150,000 m2) of land near Buttermilk Ridge at Elm Hill Road for $30,000 in 1887. But Taylor purchased the land himself and in 1888 he established Greenwood Cementry. The main purpose was to provide low cost, first class burial land for African-American residents of Nashville.[2] It is the second oldest cemetery for the African-American community in Nashville.[5]

Notable interments

Notable individuals interred here include Arna Bontemps, Charles S. Johnson, John Merritt and James C. Napier.[6] Other burials include DeFord Bailey, Marshall Keeble and Mattie Eliza Coleman.[7]
